Fact Check: Old Picture of Vegas Plane Parking Lot Shared As 2022 WEF Meet in Davos

Date:

A picture of some parked aircraft is doing the rounds on social media with a claim that it shows the parking lot at the World Economic Forum (WEF) annual meeting at Davos, Switzerland, taking place from May 22 to 26, 2022.

Social media users are sharing the post with the caption: “This is the parking lot at the Davos climate change conference this year… Narratives are important…”

Here’s the link to the above post.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the post, and found it to be misleading.

We put both the pictures individually through Reverse Image Search and found that they are old.

IMAGE 1

On putting the first image through Reverse Image Search, we found the picture in a tweet, dated May 3, 2015. The tweet reads: “The amount of private jets at the Las Vegas airport is out of hand @MayweathervsPac”

We found the same picture in a British Daily, The Daily Mail‘s website, dated May 3, 2015, with a headline: “Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao fans jet into Las Vegas in style as airport is taken over by private planes ahead of big fight”

The report stated that thousands flew to Las Vegas for a boxing match between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao. As a result, Las Vegas airport has been taken over by private jets ahead of the clash.

We put the second image through a Reverse Image search and found that the image was featured in an article by The Guardian in 2019, with a caption: “Passenger jets at the Swiss Airforce base in Dübendorf, Switzerland. The airport is one of those used for arrivals and departures at the World Economic Forum in Davos. Photograph: Arnd Wiegmann/Reuters”

We then searched for the original image on the website of Reuters and found that the image was published on January 21, 2016.

The image description reads: “Passenger jets are parked at the Swiss Airforce base in Duebendorf, Switzerland, on January 21, 2016. The Duebendorf airport is used for arrivals and departures of participants of the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos. REUTERS/Arnd Wiegmann”

Thus, we can conclude that both the images used in the post are old.

In 2021, NewsMobile debunked a similar post where similar images were shared as the parking lot of the venue where the G7 summit.

https://newsmobile.in/articles/2021/06/23/fact-check-old-pictures-of-parked-aircraft-falsely-linked-to-g7-summit/

Hence, from the above information, it is clear that the viral post is misleading.
