COVID Has Not Taken A Serious Shape Among Children, Virus May Change Its Behaviour: Dr VK Paul

Date:

Dr VK Paul Member (Health), NITI Aayog has addressed rising concerns over COVID-19 in children and assured that the virus has not taken a serious shape among children, adding that the childhood COVID-19 disease is gaining their attention.

During the Health Ministry briefing on Tuesday, he said that the cases of children with COVID-19 are mostly asymptomatic. The infections detected among the pediatric population were not serious. However, he warned that the virus may change its behaviour among the pediatric population for the worse and added that India is pushing for preparedness for such a scenario.

“Our focus is on childhood COVID-19 disease. The pediatric population is generally asymptomatic. They often get infections but their symptoms are minimal or nil. The infection has not taken serious shape in children,” he said.

“The virus may change its behaviour in the pediatric population. The impact of COVID-19 may increase in children,” he further added. The authorities will be giving more attention to the behaviour of virus among children to see how it impacts their health.

Children with COVID-19 were detected with the two most commons symptoms of pneumonia and multi-inflammatory syndrome.

Dr Paul said, “COVID19 in children has been found in 2 ways— In first they have reported pneumonia-like symptoms. In second, some cases of a multi inflammatory syndrome found among children who recently recovered from C0VID19.”
