Kerala crosses 1,000 COVID-19 cases; BMTC goes digital

The southern states on Wednesday battled various developmental challenges and could be seen dealing with governance issues.

Here are the top developments from the Southern part of India:

1. BMTC finally adopts digital payments

On Tuesday, a thousand of the total 3,500 buses belonging to the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) went digital for the first time.

Passengers were permitted to pay for their journey by scanning the QR code.

The transport authority had failed to implement this measure even during demonetization in 2016. But the COVID-19 crisis forced them to adopt this.

2. Locust alert sounded in Telangana

Telangana has sounded a alert for a locust attack for the districts of Nizamabad, Kamareddy, Asifabad, Mancherial, Jaishankar Bhoopalpalli, Adilabad and Kumaram Asifabad. The department of Agriculture has made adequate preparations to prevent damage to crops.

3. Madras HC quashes TN govt plans; declares Jayalalitha’s kin as heir to Poes Garden property

The Madras High Court has quashed Tamil Nadu government’s plan to convert former Chief Minister J Jayalalitha’s Poes Garden property ‘Veda Nilayam’ into a memorial.

The court ruled that only a part of the property could be converted into a memorial and the remaining part of it will be inherited by the former CMs niece J Deepa and nephew J Deepak.

4. Polavaram project to be completed by 2021: AP CM

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy said that the lockdown initiated by the government will have no effect on the Polavaram irrigation project, which shall be completed by 2021.

The project hopes to provide drinking water to the water parched Rayalseema region of the state.

5. Kerala touches the 1000 mark

With over 40 cases being reported on Wednesday, Kerala inched past the 1000 mark and has now reported a total 1,003 COVID-19 related cases.

However, over 50 % of these cases have recovered, announced Kerala CM Pinnarayi Vijayan.
