Situation in NE Delhi prompts US Embassy to issue security warning

The US Embassy in New Delhi has issued a security warning on Wednesday to all its citizens residing or traveling to New Delhi.

The Embassy warned against traveling to North-East part of the city where protesters have violently clashed with the security agencies and Section 144 has been imposed which curtails the gathering of four or more people in an area.

The warning has asked everyone to be alert and take precautions apart from following instructions:

  1. Avoid areas where heavy traffic or road closures or protests are expected,

2. Keep a low profile,

3.  Monitor local media for updates,

4.  Follow the instructions of local authorities,

The alert also asked the US citizens traveling abroad to monitor the US Department of State’s Bureau of Consular Affairs website where all travel warnings and alerts can be accessed.

Apart from this, the US also has the “Traveler’s checklist”, which includes security information for those living and traveling abroad.

This warning comes immediately after the two-day visit of US President Donald Trump to India from February 24-25, 2020.

These two days were marked by violent demonstrations in the national capital and President Trump in a press conference said that he had heard about the incident but refused to offer any further comment.
