CBI files chargesheet in Aircel-Maxis case; names former FM P Chidambaram, son as accused

In a massive development, former Finance Minister P Chidambaram and son Karti Chidambaram have been named as an accused in the chargesheet that is filed by the CBI in the Aircel-Maxis case. Eighteen other people are also been named in the chargesheet.

CBI also alleged the abuse of power in the granting of Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) approval. The charges against them are under the ‘Prevention of Corruption Act’. The Patiala House court will take notice of the chargesheet on July 31.

Reportedly these are the names of all the accused in the case:

  2. Karti Chidambaram
  3. Ashok Chawala
  4. A Palaniappan
  5. Deepak Kumar Singh
  6. Kumar Sanjay Singh
  7. Ashok Jha
  8. Ram Sharan
  9. S Bhaskeraman
  10. V Srinivasan
  11. Ralph Marshal
  12. T Ananda

Six companies:

  2. Advantage Strategic
  3. Astro All Asia networks
  4. Maxis Mobile
  5. Bumi Armada Barhad
  6. Bumi Armada Barhad Navigation

The filing of the chargesheet came after P Chidambaram and his son’s anticipatory bail plea was filed by the CBI and ED in 2011 and 2012 respectively was extended till August 7.

The Aircel-Maxis case, arose from the 2G spectrum allocation scam, pertains to FIPB clearances being given to Global Communication Holding Services Limited for investment in Aircel during the time that P Chidambaram was Finance Minister.

The ED had earlier said that the FIPB approval granted in 2006 by Chidambaram was beyond his mandate as he was only authorised to accord approval on project proposals up to Rs 600 crore. P. Chidambaram’s son Karti was arrested on February 28 at the Chennai airport upon his return from the United Kingdom, for his alleged role in the case.
