The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has been carrying out raids on former Finance Minister P Chidambaram’s son Karti Chidambaram’s and his associate’s residences in Chennai on Friday. The raids, which started at 7.30 am, are being carried out in connection with the Aircel-Maxis case. As per reports, four locations in Chennai and one location in Delhi are being simultaneously raided by the ED.

Notably, Karti Chidambaram failed to respond to the ED summons. Soon after a fresh summons has been sent to him, asking him to appear on January 16. Earlier, Karti Chidambaram had appealed to the Supreme Court seeking approval to travel abroad again from January 10 to 20 for business purposes.

Earlier on November 20, the apex Court had allowed Karti Chidambaram to travel abroad for his daughter’s admission in the UK. It has been alleged that Karti illegally took service charges for getting the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance to the INX Media for receiving funds from abroad worth Rs 305 crore in 2007, when his father, P Chidambaram, was the finance minister in the Congress-led UPA Government.
