The elections concluded in September 2019 and the announcements were delayed after that.

The entire electoral process has been marred by various controversies and the opposition candidate Abdullah Abdullah has accused the Election Commission of favouring Ghani and has threatened to form a parallel government, as the results haven’t gone in his favour.

The Taliban has engineered violent terror attacks across the country during the electoral process.

During the five months in between the conclusion of the electoral process and the announcement of the results, the peace talks with the Taliban were called off and has now re started.

This result that has been announced will have to be watched as it has the potential to upset political stability, in an already unstable condition that exists in Pakistan.

The new President will have many challenges before him. The first and foremost will be the issue of handling the peace talks with Taliban, handling the relations with the notorious Pakistan and reviving the process of national development.
