Kuldip Singh Chandpuri, who inspired Border movie, passes away

Brigadier Kuldip Singh Chandpuri, the hero of the famous Battle of Longewala died at the Fortis Hospital in Mohali on Saturday.

Brig Chandpuri was a recipient of the Maha Vir Chakra, the country’s second-highest gallantry award for his role at Longewala, an outpost in the Thar desert of Rajasthan.

He held off a Pakistani attack while leading a small group of Indian soldiers through the night in the 1971 war.

During the first days of the war, Major Kuldip Singh Chandpuri was posted in the western sector.

He was commanding a small group of not more than 100 soldiers and successfully defended the Longewala border post in Rajasthan against around 2000 Pakistani soldiers who were backed by more than 40 tanks.
JP Dutta’s 1997 hit Border was based on the Battle of Longewala and Chandpuri was famously played by Sunny Deol.
