COVID-19 | Top 10 global developments this Monday morning

The total number of confirmed coronavirus cases has crossed 5.4 million across the globe, according to the Johns Hopkins University tracker. The death toll stands at 345,059.

Here are the top 10 global developments this morning:

1. Brazil, the world’s second-worst coronavirus hotspot behind the United States, surpassed 3,63,000 COVID-19 cases after over 15,800 new cases were registered in the country in the past 24 hours, the country’s health ministry announced on Sunday.

2. Coronavirus death toll in the US has gone up by 638 in the last 24 hours Johns Hopkins University tracker reported. The death toll in the country is nearing the milestone of 100,000 deaths with the total number of confirmed cases at 1,643,098.

3. China reported 11 new confirmed coronavirus cases in the mainland as of end-May 24, up from three a day earlier, the National Health Commission reported.

4. The US has imposed travel restrictions on foreign nationals who have been in Brazil in the last 14 days. It comes two days after the South American nation became the world’s number two hotspot for coronavirus cases.

5. Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has said up to a million jobs could be lost in the country, as many non-essential businesses remain closed.

6.  French authorities reported the smallest daily rise in new coronavirus cases and deaths on Sunday since before a lockdown began on 17 March, raising hopes that the worst of the epidemic is over in France.

7. Australia’s most populous state, New South Wales, on Monday deployed hundreds of crowd control staff to enforce social distancing on public transport amid an expected commuter surge as schools and offices reopened and coronavirus cases fell.

8. Coronavirus lockdown measures will finally be eased for people in Madrid and Barcelona from Monday, while elsewhere in Spain the first beaches are due to reopen, AFP reported.

9. China said Sunday that its relations with the United States were “on the brink of a new Cold War,” fuelled partly by tensions over the coronavirus pandemic that has killed nearly 350,000 people worldwide and pitched the global economy into a massive downturn.

10. After two months, India resumed domestic flights on Monday as the lockdown rules ease – even as cases continue to surge ahead.
