COVID-19 | Top 10 developments in India this Monday morning

India on Monday recorded its highest ever spike of 6,977 cases and 154 deaths in India in the last 24 hours. The Total number of cases in the country now stands at 1,38,845 including 77,103 active cases, 57,720 cured and 4,021 deaths, according to the Health Ministry.

Here are the top 10 developments in India this morning:

1. India has overtaken Iran in number of COVID-19 cases. The total infections in the country stand at 1,38,845 and deaths at 4,021.

2. India resumed its domestic flight operations on Monday after two months of suspension, however, international flights will remain suspended. However, Andhra Pradesh will start flight operations on 26 May and West Bengal on 28 May.

3. The Health Ministry on Sunday listed out its guidelines for travels by flights, trains or buses within the country, mentioning that the states could develop their own protocol.

4. Several states have decided to put the passengers arriving from other states in an institutional quarantine of seven to 14 days. Others made home quarantine for a fortnight mandatory for the travellers.

5. All inbound air travellers of Punjab landing at Chandigarh airport shall be mandatorily tested for Covid-19 upon arrival, said Mohali District Magistrate (DM) Girish Dayalan.

6. Maharashtra on Sunday recorded 3,041 COVID-19 cases, the highest daily spike, taking the state tally to 50,231. The death toll in the state rose to 1,635.

7. 130 new positive cases of COVID-19 have been reported in Karnataka on Sunday, taking the total number of positive cases in the state to 2089, including 1,391 active cases and 654 discharges: Karnataka Health Department

8. Gujarat, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh have more than 6,000 confirmed cases each and are still contributing a significant number of new cases, but there is a noticeable decline in their growth rates for the last couple of weeks.

9. Experts in India were of the view that research in the country on a COVID-19 vaccine was still at a nascent stage and any concrete breakthrough was not likely within a year, PTI reported.

10. The Health Ministry has made it mandatory for stranded Indians arriving from abroad to check into institutional quarantine for 14 days at their own expense, followed by seven days of home isolation.
