Cabinet Meeting At 6:30 pm Amid Parliament’s Special Session

Date:

New Delhi: A key Union Cabinet meeting is scheduled for 6:30 pm on Monday, coinciding with the ongoing special session of Parliament, sources said. Reports suggest that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has convened the meeting of the Union Cabinet.

Ahead of the meeting Union ministers Piyush Goyal, Pralhad Joshi, and other ministers, along with Union Home Minister Amit Shah, held discussions with Modi. The meeting is anticipated to be held at the Parliament Annexe building, although the specific topics on the agenda have not been disclosed yet.

Earlier in the day, leaders from various political parties within the I.N.D.I.A. bloc decided to maintain floor coordination during the five-day session. They plan to focus on issues like inflation, unemployment, Manipur violence, and Chinese border transgressions to confront the government.

They also decided to urge the government to permit discussions on subjects concerning Adani enterprises, the plight of farmers, economic conditions within the nation, and the caste census.

Additionally, the alliance has reportedly chosen to oppose the appointment bill for the Chief Election Commissioner and other election commissioners, which has already been introduced in the Rajya Sabha, as per media reports.

Several political leaders from Congress, TMC, RJD, NCP, left parties, JMM, Samajwadi Party, DM, and VCK participated in the meeting at the office of the Leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, around 10 am.

Former Congress chief Sonia Gandhi had previously written to Modi expressing concern over the absence of an agenda for the special Parliament session and suggesting a list of topics for discussion.

Earlier, Modi described the Parliament session as short in duration but significant in terms of occasion and marked by “historic decisions.” He urged MPs to approach the proceedings with renewed enthusiasm and to overcome past shortcomings, alluding to frequent protests by opposition members during previous sessions that led to disruptions.

Modi humorously remarked that there would be plenty of time for “rona dhona” (complaining), taking a dig at the opposition’s criticism of the unusual timing of the session.

On Sunday, Pralhad Joshi requested active cooperation and support from all parties for the smooth functioning of both Houses of Parliament. The meeting of all floor leaders from various political parties in Parliament was attended by several ministers and 51 leaders representing 34 parties.

Congress MP Manickam Tagore responded to the all-party meeting, suggesting that the government conducts Parliament proceedings secretively.
