Fact Check: 2018 Images Of Injured People Falsely Linked To Karnataka 2023 Elections

Date:

A collage of photos, claiming that the Jain monks were attacked by people from the Muslim community after the victory of Congress in the Karnataka Assembly elections, is doing the rounds on social media. People are sharing these images criticising Congress for the alleged violence in the state.

A Facebook user posted the viral post with a caption: (English translation: Jain Muni was killed in Karnataka by Muslims who raised slogans of Congress Zindabad, now Congress has come in its real form, Hindus who voted for Congress, Congress will continue to give you this kind of love. Send this photo so much that it reaches Narendra Modi and Yogi ji by tomorrow. Today I have got a chance to do some good work. There must be a Muslim who will not share this video, I swear to all of you.)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral post, and found it to be false.

Running the Reverse Image Searches, we found:

Picture 1:

A tweet on an unverified account, dated April 1, 2018, carries one image that matches with the first viral image, and the date of posting confirms that it has been online since 2018.

Another tweet from 2018 shows the same image, claiming it to be from Uttar Pradesh.

Although we could not independently verify the original source of the image, it is clear that it has no relation to the recently concluded Karnataka elections.

Picture 2:

A tweet posted by the AAP leader Sanjay Singh on his official handle, dated May 30, 2018, claims the picture to be from Uttar Pradesh. We can see the first viral picture in the same thread as well. The picture was also tweeted by Congress leader Imran Pratapgarhi on his official handle on May 29, 2018.

Here too, we could not identify the original source of the image, but the date of posting for the same predates the Karnataka 2023 elections, and thus it has not relation to the latter.

Picture 3:

A news article in Deccan Chronicle — dated March 31, 2018, with a title: PostCard News founder Mahesh Vikram Hegde in jail for spreading fake news — carries another image that matches exactly with the third viral picture, informing about the arrest of Mahesh Vikram Hegde, co-founder and editor of an online web portal ‘PostCard News’ for allegedly spreading “fake” news with an intention to instigate “communal unrest” on Twitter.

According to the article, Alt News debunked Hegde’s claim and found that the photo was taken from an online Jain news portal, Ahimsa Kranti. A similar article was also published by The Hindu around the same time. The timeline for this picture as well proves that it cannot be linked to the Karnataka 2023 elections.

Therefore, we can conclusively say that the viral post, claiming Jain monks were attacked by people from the Muslim community after the victory of Congress in the Karnataka Assembly elections, is False.
