Fact Check: Doctored Image With Anti-Modi Slogan Goes Viral During PM’s Visit to Tamil Nadu

Date:

On April 8, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Chennai to inaugurate infrastructure projects worth ₹5,200 crore, including the New Integrated Terminal Building at Chennai Airport and the Chennai-Coimbatore Vande Bharat Express. He also visited the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve, where he met Bomman and Bellie, the tribal couple featured in the Oscar-winning documentary The Elephant Whisperers.

Against this backdrop, an image of a railway station signboard, with a message ‘Tamil Nadu Says Go Back Modi. We Hate You’ inscribed on it, is widely shared on social media.

The image is shared on Facebook with a caption, “This is how the public welcomed Modi in Tamilnadu”

Here’s the link to the above post.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be FALSE.

Doing a Reverse Image Search, we traced a news report in Business Insider, dated March 17, 2016, carrying the original image. The image was attributed to Ed Hanley, a photographer, who documented his 2016 journey on the Dibrugarh-Kanyakumari Vivek Express, known as the longest train ride in India.

The original image was also carried in an article by Buzzfeed, on March 15, 2016, with a headline: “25 Breathtaking Photos From India’s Longest Train Ride.” Below is the comparison between the viral image and the original image.

We also found a link to a Kanyakumari Express-time lapse YouTube video uploaded on the YouTube page of Ed Hanley. Hanley posted the time lapse video on March 3, 2016, and it included the original version of the viral image at the timestamp of 1:41.

Thus, it is evident from the above information that the viral image is edited.
