New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) gets elevated to a national party status on Monday.
AAP’s elevation in status as a national party comes as a result of their electoral performance in four states which includes Delhi, Goa, Punjab, and Gujarat.
The Election Commission announced that the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) secured the status of a state party in Nagaland and Tipra Motha Party was recognized as a state party in Tripura. The Voice of the People Party got recognition as a state party in Meghalaya.
Tipra Motha Party, Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), and Voice of the People Party got recognition as state parties based on their recent performance in the assembly polls earlier this year in Tripura, Nagaland, and Meghalaya respectively.
In a major setback, the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress and Sharad Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) have lost their national party status and have been the status of regional parties. The CPI too was assigned the regional party status.
The poll panel also withdrew the state party status of Rashtriya Lok Dal in Uttar Pradesh and of Revolutionary Socialist Party in West Bengal.
With this announcement, the country now has six national parties which include, Aam Aadmi Party, Congress, BJP, CPM, Bahujan Samaj Party, and National People’s Party (NPP).
How does a political party gain the status of National Party In India?
To gain the status of a national party in India, a political party has to be recognised as a state party in four states or atleast 2% seat share in Lok Sabha.
A party should get a 6% vote share in the last assembly elections in any four states and 4 seats in the last Lok Sabha polls.
In case a political party losses the ‘National Party’ status, the candidates from the said party will not get ‘common symbol’ in states where the party is not recognized.
