Fact Check: US President Biden’s Ice Cream Remark Falsely Linked To Nashville School Shooting

Date:

On March 27, 2023, a shooter opened fire at a private Christian school in Nashville, Tennessee’s Green Hills area, killing six people three students and three staff members. The gunman was identified by the authorities as Audrey Hale (28), a former student at the institution. Soon after authorities arrived, Hale was shot and killed by one of the officers.

Against this backdrop, a video showing US President Joe Biden talking about ice cream is widely shared on social media, claiming that he made this remark in reference to the Nashville school shooting.

The video is shared on Facebook with a caption: “Biden after 6 people dead in Nashville shooting of private Christian school: “I came down because I heard there was chocolate chip ice cream.” ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME????”

Here’s the link to the above post.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be MISLEADING.

Searching through the transcripts uploaded on the official website of The White House, we found out that these remarks were made by Joe Biden at the SBA Women’s Business Summit. According to the transcript, Biden started his speech by saying: “Thank you. My name is Joe Biden. (Laughter.) I’m Dr Jill Biden’s husband. (Laughter.) And I eat Jeni’s Ice Cream, chocolate chip. (Laughter.) I came down because I heard there was chocolate chip ice cream. (Laughter.)”

Later, he addresses the children present in the audience, putting the entire ice cream remark in context. “THE PRESIDENT:  And it’s a delight to have you all here. And who are those good-looking kids back here? (Laughter.) MS. BLAKELY: Those are my kids. THE PRESIDENT: They’re your kids? All four of them? MS. BLAKELY: Yes”, reads the transcript. The viral video omits the aforementioned background, including the fact that he was speaking at a women’s summit and that he wasn’t holding a news conference regarding the Nashville school shooting.

Joe Biden’s full speech at the SBA Women’s Business Summit was uploaded on the official YouTube channel of The White House on March 28, 2023.

However, it can be seen in the video above as well that shortly after making his opening remarks at the women’s conference, Biden brought up the unfortunate incident that took place in Nashville.

Thus, it is evident from the above information that Biden did not make the viral ice cream in reference to the Nashville school shooting.
