Foreign Universities To Soon Set Up Campuses In India: All You Need To Know

New Delhi: The University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Professor Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar interacted with the media over the setting up and operation of campuses of foreign Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs) in India.

Kumar issued guidelines on several topics such as the admission and fee process of the Indian campuses of foreign universities and more.

UGC approval compulsory

The commission has made it clear that any Foreign Higher Education Institution must have approval from UGC before setting up their campus in India.

The approval would be offered for the first 10 years of the university in India.

Eligibility for setting up campuses in India

In order to set up a campus in India, Foreign Universities must have secured a position within the top 500 of overall / subject-wise global rankings. Foreign Educational Institutions must be reputed institutions in their home jurisdiction.

Admission process & fee details

Regarding the admission process, UGC Chairman stated that the educational institutions will have the autonomy to decide their own admission process to admit domestic and foreign students.

The fee structure for the same should be set in a reasonable and transparent manner. The universities are also free to offer full or partial scholarships.

Offline classes only

UGC Chairman added that these universities cannot offer online or distance learning programmes. They can offer only full-time programmes in physical mode.
