A video of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is being circulated on social media claiming that the government has announced a Lockdown starting at midnight.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the post, and found it to be old.

With a keyword search, we found the original video uploaded on the YouTube channel of Narendra Modi, dated March 24, 2020, with a title: Why is the 21-day lockdown necessary to fight COVID-19? Watch this video to find out more!

The viral clip can be seen from 31 sec of the video.

The original report on the YouTube channel of India TV, uploaded on March 24, 2020,  describes that PM Modi in his address has announced a complete lockdown across the nation as a means to combat Coronavirus. Modi said this nationwide lockdown would last for 21 days. He stressed on the importance of this lockdown and spoke of the consequ- ences that India could bear if the virus was not kept under control for the next 21 days.

Even the Press Information Bureau, in a tweet dated December 24, 2022, has clarified that no such decision has been taken by the government.

Hence, it is clear that the viral claim is false.
