Delhi L-G Directs Chief Secy To Recover ₹97 Crore From AAP For ‘Political Ads’

Date:

New Delhi: Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena on Tuesday ordered Chief Secretary Naresh Kumar to recover ₹97 crores from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) over alleged accusations that it published political advertisements as government-run ads.

According to the newswire agency ANI, the order came in wake of Supreme Court orders of 2015, the Delhi HC order of 2016, and the Committee on Content Regulation in Government Advertising’s order of 2016, being violated by the Aam Aadmi Party government.

According to a PTI report, Identifying specific advertisements published by the government which were in “stark violation of guidelines”, a Committee on Content Regulation in Government Advertising had in 2016 directed the Directorate of Information and Publicity (DIP) to quantify the amounts spent by it in such advertisements and recover the same from the ruling AAP.

The DIP has further quantified the amount of ₹97 crores that has been booked under the category of “non-conforming advertisements”.

According to a source close to PTI, the DIP had earlier in 2017, directed AAP to pay a sum of ₹42.26 crores to the state exchequer immediately and directly pay the pending amount of ₹54.87 crores to the advertising agencies or publications concerned within a span of 30 days.

However, the source further added that “even after the lapse of five years and eight months, the AAP has not complied with the DIP order,”.
