Fact Check: Picture from Euro 2016 Inaccurately Compared with FIFA World Cup 2022

Date:

Qatar banned the sale of beer at the World Cup stadiums just two days before the start of the FIFA World Cup 2022. The decision was taken in order to adhere to Islamic law. Although beer was not allowed, non-alcoholic beers were permitted, while other alcoholic beverages were only permitted in the luxury hospitality areas of the stadiums.

Against this backdrop, a viral picture showing the comparison between two photos (a clean and a messy street) is doing the rounds on social media. Users have shared the post claiming that the visuals are a comparison between two countries with and without a ban on alcohol during separate FIFA World Cups.

A Facebook user posted the viral picture with a caption: The difference between a World Cup without alcoholic beverages and a World Cup with alcoholic beverages. #FIFAWorldCup #Qatar Courtesy Joram van Klavere

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral picture, and found it to be misleading.

We initiated our search for both the images:

Image 1

A Shutterstock photo titled: Lusail, Qatar November 10 2022: Lusail Plaza Towers, celebrity FIFA World Cup 2022 decoration with colourful flags around the street people walking at night, posted on November 10, 2022.

The elements in the picture match with the 1st image in the collage and the description of the image informs that it is from the Lusail Plaza Towers one of the fan zones during the FIFA World Cup. We found a full tour video of the same uploaded on a YouTube channel named Qatar Street View.

Therefore, we can conclusively say that the 1st picture is from FIFA World Cup 2022, Qatar.

IMAGE 2

An article published by Sanslimitesn.com the website of a media company from Senegal, dated June 17, 2016 and titled: Euro 2016 : voici les dégâts après le passage des Irlandais à Paris ! (English: Euro 2016: here is the damage after the passage of the Irish in Paris!)

The image in the article matches exactly with the second image and by translating the article from French to English, we get to know that the visual is from Paris during the Euro 2016 tournament. The littering was done by the Irish fans after their team beat Ukraine in the European tournament.

Another article, published in Le Parisien with the same image, corroborates the claim made in Sanslimites. This proves that the second image is not from the FIFA World Cup but from the Euro 2016 cup held in France.

Therefore, we can conclusively say that the claim by the viral picture is misleading.
