Surat: The first phase of voting for the Gujarat Election is all set to start on Thursday where a total of 89 constituencies will go for polling.

- The ruling BJP will contest to regain ground for the seventh successive term in the state.
- The contest in this election is mainly between BJP, Aam Aadmi Party and Congress.
- A total of 788 candidates across 19 districts of South Gujarat and the Kutch-Saurashtra region will contest in the first phase.
- According to reports, 70 women candidates while 339 independent candidates will contest in the first phase.
- Out of 89 seats up for polls, fourteen seats are reserved for Scheduled Tribes while seven seats are reserved for Dalits in the state.
- Polling is set to commence at 8:00 am and will continue till 5:30 pm.
- 2,39,76,670 voters can vote in this phase out of which 1,24,33,362 fall in the male category while 1,15,42,811 fall in the female category. 497 third-gender voters will exercise their power to vote.
- The facility of webcasting of 50% of the polling booth has been arranged in this phase.
- Central paramilitary forces have also been deployed across the polling booth.
- A total of 25,430 polling booths, of which 16,416 are in rural areas, and 9,014 in urban areas have been set up.
- Rivaba Jadeja, wife of cricketer Ravindra Jadeja will contest from the Jamnagar north seat.
- Kantilal Amrutiya, former BJP MLA from Morbi seat is set to contest in the phase after the unfortunate Morbi bridge collapse incident.
- He was termed as ‘Morbi Hero’ after videos of him reportedly jumping in water to rescue victims went viral on social media.
- Alpesh Kathiriya from Varachha Road (Surat district) was earlier a close aid of Hardik Patel has been given the ticket by Kejriwal led Aam Aadmi Party.
