FACT CHECK

NewsMobile did the fact-check and found it to be misleading.

Doing a Google Reverse Image Search with one of the screenshots, we found the same video uploaded by a YouTube channel,  NY News, in August 2022, with the caption: “MPA Tariq Masih Gill bold speech at National Assembly of Pakistan on forced religious conversions.”

Another YouTube channel, PTV Parliament, also shared a video in which Tariq Masih Gill can be heard talking about forced conversion. He made the speech during the minority convention held by National Assembly. In the conversation, he talks about the forced conversion of a 12-year-old Christian girl to Islam.

We further searched for Tariq Masih Gill and found that he is a Christian and has been elected as a Member of the Provincial Assembly of Punjab, in the general elections 2013 against one of the seats reserved for Non-Muslims. He also functions as Parliamentary Secretary for Human Rights & Minorities Affairs, according to the website of the Provincial Assembly of Punjab.

According to a report by The Tribune, dated August 12, 2022, “For the first time in Pakistan’s parliamentary history, a minority convention was held in the National Assembly hall to commemorate the speech of Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah regarding the freedom and equality of minorities in the then constituent assembly on August 11, 1947. A unanimous resolution was passed for the rights of minorities, in which all the representatives of minority communities declared Parliament as the centre of their hopes.”

Hence, we can ascertain that the man in the viral video is not a Hindu but an MP from a Christian community. Further, he was not pleading for mercy, but it was an outburst against the forced conversion of a minor girl in Pakistan’s National Assembly.

Thus, the viral claim is misleading.
