Fact Check: 3-Year-Old Image Viral as Recent Chhath Puja Celebrations in Delhi’s Polluted Yamuna River

Date:

On the occasion of Chhath Puja, an image comparing the Sabarmati river of Gujarat with the polluted Yamuna river of Delhi is being widely shared on social media. The social media users say that while there was a very clean arrangement on the ghat of Sabarmati river, people of Delhi had to celebrate Chhath festival at the Yamuna river with poisonous foam.

The image is shared on Facebook with a caption: “छठ पर्व सूर्य उपासना व लोक आस्था का पर्व है! एक तरफ छठ पूजा के लिए समर्पित गुजरात सरकार का मॉडल। वहीं दूसरी तरफ केजरीवाल सरकार का पूर्वांचल समाज को अपमानित करने वाला मॉडल। कुछ गुजरात सरकार से भी सीखों केजरीवाल जी!” (English translation: Chhath festival is the festival of sun worship and folk faith. While the model of Gujarat government is dedicated to Chhath Puja, Kejriwal government’s model humiliates the Purvanchal society. Learn something from the Gujarat government, too, Kejriwal)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be MISLEADING.

Doing a simple Reverse Image Search, we traced a news report in The Economic Times, dated November 4, 2019, that carried the same viral image showing people in the foamy polluted Yamuna river. According to the report, “On a day Delhi saw its air quality dip to a three-year low, thousands of devotees offered prayers along the banks of Yamuna river to mark the end of Chhath Puja.” Check a similar news report published in 2019 here

This image went viral in 2021 also, on the occasion of Chhath. The second image of the viral collage on Twitter had been shared by BJP leader Shahzad Jaihind on  October 28, describing it as the riverfront of the Sabarmati river.

Pollution in the Yamuna river is often in discussion on the occasion of Chhath Puja. This year, the Delhi government arranged artificial ghats for the devotees where the Chhath festival was celebrated. Apart from this, the officials of the Delhi Jal Board had also launched a campaign to reduce the foam by spraying chemicals in Yamuna.

Thus, it is evident from the above information that an old image is shared as recent Chhath Puja celebrations in Delhi’s polluted Yamuna river.
