Fact Check: Clipped Video Of JP Nadda Viral With Misleading Claim

Date:

A video of Bharatiya Janata Party chief JP Nadda, in which he can be heard saying that since 1951-1952 BJP is the only party which said that said two legislations and two constitutions will not work in one country, has gone viral. Nadda’s comments came against the backdrop of the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir.

Sharing this video, social media users are accusing him of lying since Bharatiya Janata Party was established in 1980.

The video is being shared on Facebook with the caption, “जूठ का अड्डा, जे पी नड्डा भाजपा की स्थापना ही जब 1980 में हुई तो 1951-52 में वो कैसे कह सकती है ? भाजपा का पूरा कुनबा झूठ पर भरोसा करता है”

(English translation: JP Nadda, the haunt of lies, when BJP was established in 1980, how can it say in 1951-52? The entire clan of BJP believes in lies)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim and found it to be MISLEADING.

Using the InVid Tool, we extracted keyframes from the viral video and performed a Reverse Image Search with relevant keywords. This search directed us to the official Twitter handle of the ‘Office of JP Nadda’ which  carried the full speech on October 16, 2022, given at Ramlila Maidan in Delhi. In this speech at 7 minutes, JP Nadda says that “Since the establishment of Jana Sangh in the 1950s, the ethos, thinking and methods of all the parties have changed but the Bharatiya Janata Party is the only party, which was started 1951-52, believes that two constitutions will not work in one country.”

In fact, BJP was earlier known as Jan Sangh and Nadda was talking about his party’s point of view on the issue of Kashmir in this rally. After the merger of the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir in India, some special rights were given to this province under Article 370 of the Indian Constitution. On August 5, 2019, the central government abolished the special status of the state.

The ‘Bharatiya Jan Sangh’ was established in the year 1952 as the political wing of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. It also won three seats in the first Lok Sabha elections. After this, in the general elections held after the Emergency in the year 1977, the ‘Bharatiya Jana Sangh’ merged with the ‘Janata Party’ and formed several opposition parties. After the breakup of ‘Janata Party’ in the year 1979, ‘Bharatiya Jana Sangh’ came out with a new name ‘Bharatiya Janata Party’ in the year 1980. That is, the present BJP may have been established in 1980 but its history is associated with ‘Bharatiya Jan Sangh’.

Thus, it is evident from the above information that a portion of BJP chief JP Nadda’s speech is being shared with misleading claims.
