Paris: Real Madrid’s striking sensation Karim Benzema won the Ballon d’Or Award on Monday at the Theatre du Chatelet in Paris.
Karim Benzema also became the second Frenchman ever to clinch the honor since Zinedine Zidane in 1998. Benzema was one of the key players in the Real Madrid lineup that led his team to a win at the Champions League, and a successful run at the La Liga titles.
Benzema while receiving the award said that “It makes me really proud. All the work I did, I never gave up. It was a childhood dream like all kids – the motivation. I had two motivations in my life – Zidane and Ronaldo. I’ve always had this dream in my mind that anything is possible.”
In the season, Benzema scored 44 goals in 46 appearances, including 15 goals in the Champions League tournament. During his ultimate run in this season’s Champions League, Benzema scored a hat-trick against PSG in a Round of 16 games.
Bayern Munich’s Sadio Mane finished as a runner-up while Kevin De Bruyne of Manchester City was in the third spot.
Barcelona’s Alexia Putellas won two back-to-back Women’s Ballon d’Or trophies in consecutive seasons. Alexia won the award after an incredible 2021-22 season in which she helped Barca reach the second consecutive Champions League final, scoring 11 goals in 10 matches and a total of 18 goals and 15 assists within 26 league matches.
FC Barcelona star Robert Lewandowski clinched the Gerd Muller Award, getting recognized as the best striker.
Real Madrid’s Thibaut Courtois won the best goalkeeper on the globe, securing the Yashin Trophy.
