Assam: Flood Situation Remains Grim, Nearly 40,000 People Affected

Guwahati: The flood situation in Assam continues to grow grim as incessant rainfall lashes over several districts of the state with more than 40,000 people being affected.

According to PTI, nearly 40,000 people have been affected by the rains in the state with many taking shelter in the relief camps and distribution centres of the affected districts.

According to officials, the rainfall has affected four districts comprising of atleast eight revenue circles, including nearly 50 villages.

According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), the water level of the Brahmaputra river is flowing above the danger level mark at Nimatighat in Jorhat.

A total of 15,084 people have been affected alone in the Dhemaji district while 14,895 people were affected in Lakhimpur and 3,857 in the Dibrugarh district.

The flood report of ASDMA stated that 22 villages in the Dhemaji district, 23 in the Lakhimpur district, and one village in the Dibrugarh district have been affected by the current wave of floods.

Reports of erosion from the Bongaigaon, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Morigaon, and Sonitpur districts have also been received.

The regional meteorological department added “isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall” during the day. Thunderstorms and lightning will take place in isolated places. From Thursday to Saturday light to moderate rainfall is likely at many places of the state.”
