Date:

A video of RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das is being circulated on social media. In the video, helpline numbers to block digital payment apps like Google pay, PhonePe and Paytm are shared. The video advises people to reach out to the given numbers in case their phone is lost or stolen.

A Facebook user shared the video with hashtags such as: #rbi #paytm #google #googlepay #phonepe

Here’s the link to the above post.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the video and found it to be edited.

We ran a keyword search, but did not find any notice on the website of RBI regarding any such helpline numbers. Moreover, we did not find any media reports to verify that such numbers have been launched by RBI.

Running a Reverse Image Search of the video keyframes, we found the original video on the YouTube channel of RBI, dated May 5, 2021.

However, in the original video, we did not find any mention of digital payment apps. Moreover, his voice is different from that used in the viral video, indicating that the viral video is edited.

Also, a tweet by PIB, dated September 29, 2022, has clarified that the video is edited.

Hence, based on the above fact check, it is clear that the viral video is edited and the claim is false.
