Fact Check: Old Video Of ‘Floating’ Car Falsely Linked To Recent Bengaluru Floods

Virtually under water due to incessant rains, Bengaluru along with other parts of the state of Karnataka is expected to receive heavy rainfall over the next two days as well according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). 

In this backdrop, a video of a sports car floating on a flooded street is being widely shared on social media linking it to Bengaluru rains. 

The video is being shared on Facebook with the caption, “All the #unicorn #millionaire #startup founders in Bangalore right now”

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim and found it to be MISLEADING. 

Using the InVid Tool, we extracted keyframes from the viral video and performed a Reverse Image Search. This search directed us to a news report published on June 4, 2022, that carried a similar screengrab with the headline, “Florida Corvette Driver Somehow Makes it Through Flood Waters Up to Windshield.” It became evident as this article was published in June 2022 and is in no way linked to the current floods in Bengaluru.

A related article was published on June 10, 2022, with the headline, “Watch: Chevrolet C8 Corvette swims through a flooded street”. According to the article, this video is from Miami, Florida. 

Although we could not ascertain the exact location of the viral video, it is evident that the viral video is from June 2022 and not related to the recent flooding in Bengaluru.
