Fact Check: Edited Clip of Rahul Gandhi Viral With False Claim

Date:

A 14-second video of Rahul Gandhi showing a poster and turning his back to the reporters is doing the rounds on social media. The video is also dubbed with a famous movie dialogue “Jahanpanah tussi great ho, tohfa kabool karo” from the Bollywood movie 3 Idiots. Many social media users have shared the video, mocking him and claiming that this is what Gandhi did when the reporters asked him to show the other side of the poster.

A Facebook user posted the viral video with a caption:

गुलाम चमचें इसे पीएम बनने का सपना देखते हैं ज़ब पत्रकार नें कहा पोस्टर पीछे से भी दिखाओ तो अपने राहुल जी ने पिछवाड़ा दिखा दिया क्या आईटम है यार (English translation: Ghulam Chamchain dreams of becoming PM when journalists said to show the poster from behind, then your Rahul ji showed the backyard.. what is the item man!)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral video, and found it to be misleading.

Running a Reverse Image Search of the video keyframes, we traced a picture, dated January 19, 2021, uploaded on the stock photography website Alamy. Gandhi is seen sitting with other Congress leaders (Randeep Singh Surjewala and K.C. Venugopal) in the photo. The background and his attire in the picture, too, match with the viral video.

The caption of the picture reads: ‘New Delhi, India. 19th Jan 2021. Indian National Congress (opposition party) leader, Rahul Gandhi (C), AICC General Secretary, Randeep Singh Surjewala (L) and K.C. Venugopal (R) seen during a press conference on the issue of new farmers law at the All-India Congress Committee (AICC) headquarter.’.

Conducting a Google Keyword Search to know more about the press conference against  farm bills, we found a YouTube live stream video, dated January 19, 2021, with a title: LIVE: Special Press Briefing by Shri Rahul Gandhi at AICC HQ, posted on the official YouTube account of the Indian National Congress.

Closely looking at the video, we found out that the same interaction, as that of the viral video, took place at 02:21. Gandhi says “See how fair we are… we are showing it from each side… if it was the BJP, they would do this” and then he turns around, mocking the party. The keyframes match exactly with the viral video, but the latter has been edited midway while he is speaking and dubbed with the dialogue in order to troll him.

Gandhi had also released a booklet titled Kheti Ka Khoon at the press conference. It is based on the controversial farm laws proposed by the Central government and he was showing the book cover to the media when the viral incident happened.

Therefore, we can conclusively say that the viral video claiming that Rahul Gandhi showed his back to the reporters when asked to show the other side of the poster, is misleading.
