Fact Check: Does This Viral Video Show Pak Army Rescuing Balochistan Flood Victim?

Recently, flash floods killed 124 people and damaged over 10,000 houses in Balochistan. The incessant rain has destroyed bridges, breached dams, and washed away roads in Pakistan’s poorest province.

In the above context, a video of a helicopter rescuing a flood victim has gone viral, claiming that it is of the Pakistan army rescuing the victim in Balochistan.

The video is shared with a caption: “Something extraordinary, Jawans risked their own life to rescue flood victims in Balochistan #NewsHouse.”

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile did the fact check, and found the claim to be misleading.

On doing a Google Reverse Image Search with one of the screenshots, we found the same video on a YouTube channel, dated July 28, 2022. The video is shared with a caption: “Mi-17 Helicopter rescue in flash flood| flash flood| Human Rescue Operation at Afghanistan.”

We also found a screenshot of the video shared by the website Srbijadanas with a caption: “Kandahar province is currently facing severe flooding. According to footage from the region, significant damage was caused by heavy rains, as rivers overflowed their banks and flooded local settlements. A video released by the Daily Post news agency confirmed that military helicopters were deployed in the area for rescue operations.”

The video was shared by a Twitter handle, Daily Post Turkey, on January 4, 2022.

The image of the incident was also uploaded by AFP with a caption: “In this photo taken on March 2, 2019, an Afghan military helicopter rescues people from atop an overturned truck in a flooded area of Arghandab district in Kandahar province. Hence, we can ascertain that the viral post is misleading.
