Fact Check: 2013 Video Falsely Linked To Recent Protest Over Fuel Price Hike In Bangladesh

Date:

Bangladesh recently saw a significant increase in fuel prices, sparking widespread protests and rallies in the country. Against this backdrop, a video showing protests and vandalism is widely shared on social media, linking to the recent protest against the petrol price hike.

The video is shared on Facebook with a caption: “Liberal’s love Bangladesh reports huge protests and clashes in several cities after the government decided to increase petrol and diesel prices by 51% and 42%, respectively. Huge lines are reported at petrol stations all over Bangladesh… Liberal paradise, the country with more PCI, ahead in the happiness index, more exports in textiles now suffering an economic crisis.”

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be MISLEADING.

The Reverse Image Search directed us to a YouTube video that carried the same viral clip on May 6, 2013, with a description: “Islamist hardliners, demanding a new anti-blasphemy law, engage in running battle with police, which are understood to have killed 22.”

A New York Times report, dated May 6, 2013, says: Conflicts reportedly broke out on May 5, 2013, in Dhaka. At least, 22 individuals died as a result of this. CNN also published an article reporting the same incident in 2013.

The Telegraph also carried the same clip in a video news report published on May 6, 2013. The video description reads: “More than a dozen people died in clashes on Monday between police and Islamic hardliners, demanding that Bangladesh implement an anti-blasphemy law, police said.”

Thus, it is now clear that a 2013 video is being falsely linked to the recent protest in Bangladesh against petrol price hike. Therefore, the viral claim is misleading.
