Single-Use Plastic Ban: Delhi Sets Up Control Room; Rs 1 Lakh Fine For Violation

New Delhi: Amid the nationwide ban imposed on the usage of single-use plastic (SUP) from July 1, the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) announced that they will set up a plastic control room to monitor the implementation of the ban.

The Control Room will be receiving the complaints and will direct actions against the use of SUPs. According to a report by PTI, violation of the rule and guidelines will lead to a fine of up to ₹1 lakh or a jail term up to five years under Environment Protection Act 1986.

The report further added that the role of DPCC is to keep a check on the manufacture of SUPs but we will also take complaints and duly transfer them to the respective municipal bodies.

According to PTI, the officials will start shutting down the units violating the ban from Monday by following the relevant provisions of the law.

Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai earlier said that they will be lenient for the first 10 days and will put in efforts to create awareness around the alternatives that can be used in the place of SUPs.

The report further added that the DPCC has constituted 15 teams while the revenue department has constituted 33 teams to monitor the implementation of the ban.

In order to spread awareness on the alternatives of the SUPs, Delhi Government will impart training across eco clubs in Delhi on 19th July.

The Green Delhi Application has also been updated by the department to register complaints against such units defaulting the imposition of ban. Green War Room will be used by the Environment Department to keep a check on the pollution.
