Assam Floods: Situation Improves; Over 22 Lakh People Affected

Guwahati: The situation of flood and waterlogging in the state of Assam shows signs of improvement with the water level of most of the rivers maintaining a receding trend in the past few hours as confirmed by the officials on Monday.

According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), the total number of affected people in the state declined to 22.21 lakh across 28 districts in the last 24 hours.

The officials further added that the situation remains the same in the districts of Silchar and Cachar as most of the areas remain waterlogged after rains.

According to PTI, the rivers Kopili, Barak, and Kushiara are flowing above the danger level. The Indian Air Force continues rescue operations and is providing necessary items like food, and drinking water in Silchar town.

Cachar Deputy commissioner said that Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) is monitoring the situation to prepare a flood map for Silchar town so as to identify and mark the affected areas.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited the town twice to review the situation and take account of the rescue operations.

According to the ASDMA bulletin, 2,542 villages under 75 revenue circles remain affected by the current wave of floods. Instances of large-scale erosion have been reported from Bongaigaon, Charaideo, Chirang, Hailakandi, Sonitpur, and South Salmara.
