Congress MP Shashi Tharoor Slams Centre Over ‘Ruthless’ Suppression Of Protest

Date:

New Delhi: Amid the arrests of several leaders and party workers of the Congress party on Wednesday, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor voiced his opinion on the issue and said that the ruling party should remember that they were never treated like this during their tenure.

Shashi Tharoor in a tweet expressed his anguish towards the treatment that the Congress workers and leaders have received in the past two days. He tweeted that “This kind of police bandobast for a political party dharna of MPs, not rioters?! One would think there was no more important work for ⁦Delhi Police⁩ to do! Or does the Home Ministry think that freedom of assembly is for cops, not citizens, in our democracy?”

He further added that “There’s no doubt that a political party has the right to protest an attempt to stifle the voice of its leader through malicious prosecution.”

Congress party on Wednesday said that Delhi Police cops beat up the workers who were trying to get to the Congress party office. Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala demanded that an FIR should be lodged against the cops and disciplinary action should be taken against them.

Shashi Tharoor in the tweet further added that “The ruthless suppression of INC protests is a blot on our democracy. The ruling party should remember they were not treated this way!”
