Fact Check: Punjab Cops Didn’t Distribute Sweets After Sidhu Was Sentenced Jail Term

Date:

Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu was sentenced to one year in jail in a 1988 road-rage case in which he was let off three years ago with a fine of 1,000 by a three-judge bench led by Chief Justice of India N.V. Ramana on May 19, 2022.

Against this backdrop, several social media users are sharing an image of a policeman distributing sweets. The post is shared with a caption claiming that Punjab police distributed sweets after Navjot Singh Sidhu was sentenced to one-year imprisonment.

(English translation: “Punjab police is distributing sweets after Navjot Singh Sidhu was sentenced to one-year jail. Had the police department provided legal help, Sidhu would have been sentenced to five years imprisonment. Also, the policemen should be jailed for 10 days, just to explain that jail is not a bad thing… only ego, humane, and corruptions are bad.”)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile did a fact check, and found the claim to be fake.

On doing a Google Reverse Image Search, we found a video uploaded by a Facebook page TV Punjab on March 11, 2022. The video is shared with a caption that suggests that Havaldar Sandeep Singh distributed sweets on Navjot Sidhu’s defeat in Punjab Assembly polls.

The caption in Punjabi reads: “ਠੋਕੋ ਤਾਲੀ ਠੁੱਕ ਗਿਆ”, ਹਵਾਲਦਾਰ ਸੰਦੀਪ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ Navjot Sidhu ਦੀ ਹਾਰ ਤੇ ਵੰਡੀ ਬਰਫ਼ੀ ” (English translation: Havaldar Sandeep Singh distributes sweets on Navjot Sidhu’s defeat.)

Another report, dated March 12, 2022, by World Punjabi TV suggested that Havaldar Sandeep Singh distributed sweets after Sidhu was defeated in Punjab Assembly Elections 2022, which was held on March 10, 2022.

A hyperlocal news channel, Rustic media also shared an interview of the policeman saying that he clapped as Sidhu lost the election.

Hence, with the above fact-check it is clear that the video in question is old and is being shared with false narrative.
