Fact Check: Old Video from COVID-19 Lockdown Falsely Linked to Arrest of DU Professor

Date:

Delhi University’s Hindu College Professor Ratan Lal was granted bail on May 21 after being arrested for his alleged objectionable Facebook post on ‘Shivling’. Against this backdrop, a video in which some policemen can be seen making a person mount a vehicle with the help of a stick-like device is being widely shared on social media linking it to the arrest of Ratan Lal.

The video is shared on Facebook with a Hindi caption: “शिवलिंग पर घटिया और बेहूदा बयान देने वाला दिल्ली यूनिवर्सिटी के प्रोफेसर “रतन लाल” को दिल्ली पुलिस ने धरदबोचा”

(English translation: Delhi police have beaten the professor of Delhi University “Ratan Lal” who gave a poor and ridiculous statement on Shivling)

Here’s the link to the above post. Here, here, here, here

The video is being widely shared on Facebook.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim and found it to be MISLEADING.

Using the InVid Tool, we extracted keyframes from the viral video and performed a Reverse Image Search. The search directed us to an article published by NDTV on April 25, 2020, which carried similar visuals.

According to the report, “this video was from Chandigarh. During the COVID-19 lockdown, the VIP security wing of Chandigarh police made a five-feet long metal device for the violators of the lockdown so that the police can catch them without coming in contact, and take them to the police vehicle.”

The same video was also tweeted by the official account of DGP Chandigarh Police on April 25, 2020. The tweet reads: “VIP security wing of Chandigarh Police has devised this unique way of tackling non-cooperating corona suspects and curfew breakers. Great equipment, great drill.”

Many other news websites also published similar articles reporting the same incident during the COVID-19 lockdown. Check here and here

Thus, it is evident from the above information that an old video is being falsely linked to the arrest of DU Professor Ratan Lal. Therefore, the viral claim is misleading.
