England’s star batsman Joe Root has stepped down from the position of Test captaincy on Thursday. The decision came after a 4-0 loss at the Ashes followed by the series loss against the West Indies.
Joe Root in a statement said that “After returning from the Caribbean Tour and having time to reflect, I have decided to step down as England’s Men’s Test captain. It is the most challenging decision I had to make in my career but having discussed this with my family and closest to me, I know the timing is right.”
Joe Root has an exceptional list of records as a captain for the England Men’s side. Root has led his team and won several series since he took up the task of captaincy back in 2017 after Alastair Cook. He won the series against India back in 2018. He led the team to victory in South Africa back in 2020. He became the first captain to win a test series in Sri Lanka in 2001. Joe Root scored 14 centuries while being the captain of the England Test team.
He further added in his statement that “I am immensely proud to have captained my country and will look back at the 5 years with enormous pride. It has been an honor to have done the job and to have been a custodian of what is the pinnacle of English cricket.”
