Amid the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia, a video is being circulated on social media claiming to show a 20-year-old video of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky performing in front of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The video is being shared with the caption, “Circa 20 years ago today. Zelensky made a joke about Putin while he was in the audience on a Russia’s comedy show Putin didn’t applaud. Today. Implacable foes.”

NewsMobile fact-checked the posts and found the claim to be false.
We extracted the keyframes of the video and put them through a Reverse Image Search along with some keywords.
The search led us to the original video of Zelensky’s performance on the verified YouTube channel called KVN, a popular comedic talent show in Russia. The video was shared in March 2012 with the title, “KVN major league 2002”.
However, we did not find the clip of Putin sitting in the audience, anywhere in the above video.
We then ran a search to find out the origin of the clip showing Russian President Vladimir Putin. A keyword search on YouTube led us to another video uploaded by KVN in 2013 with the title, “KVN Premier League team – Special project 2006.”
Thus, it is clear from the above information that clips from two separate videos were edited together to make it seem like Zelensky was performing in front of Putin. Hence, we can say that the viral post is false.
