Fact Check: Does The Viral Image Show Shooting Down Of Chinese UAV At LAC?

Date:

An image is being widely shared on social media in which a grounded plane can be seen with an army personnel walking alongside with a claim that a Chinese Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) was shot down by Indian Army near Line of Actual Control (LAC). The post further claims that the UAV was spying and Defense Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) reached the destination to collect the sample.

The image was shared with a text embed that reads, “India shot down Chinese UAV Craft in Line of Actual Control which spied India at 60,000 ft, DRDO arrived at incident took place for recovering parts.”

The link to the post can be here.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile did a fact check and found the claim to be fake.

On doing a Google Reverse Image Search we found the same image was uploaded by a website, Ahval News on September 3, 2019, with a caption that read, “Chinese Wing Loong II UAV shot down in Libya.” The report said that Turkish technology was reportedly behind the laser weapon that shot down a combat drone in Libya.

Another website, Turkey Gazette also uploaded the same image on November 8, 2020. The report associated with the image read, “Turkey uses laser weapon technology to shoot down Chinese UAV Wing Loong II in Libya.”

We could not find any media report to suggest that Chinese UAV was shot down at LAC by Indian Army.

Hence, an old image of Chinese UAV downed in Libya is widely being shared as UAV downed by Indian Army.
