Fact Check: Has EC Announced Re-Election In 142 Seats In Uttar Pradesh? Here’s The Truth

Date:

After results of Uttar Pradesh Assembly Elections were declared, a screenshot of a news clipping has gone viral on social media claiming that Election Commission has accepted that there was tampering in the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and has announced re-election in 142 seats.

Here’s the link to the above post

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim and found it to be FALSE.

Starting with our investigation, we did a keyword search but could not find any credible media report which corroborated the viral claim.

However, we found several media reports refuting the viral claim calling it “false and misleading”.

Further, we performed a Reverse Image Search with relevant keywords and found this YouTube video uploaded on the channel named ‘Nation TV’. We played the entire video but could not find the news anchor or information seen in the viral thumbnail. The entire video features just a phone conversation between two people about EVM tampering.

We also noticed that the YouTube Channel had used similar misleading thumbnails in many of its videos.

Searching further, we found that the government’s nodal agency Press Information Bureau also refuted the viral claim terming it as false information.

Thus, it is evident from the above that the viral claim is false and EC has not announced re-election in 142 seats in Uttar Pradesh.
