Harendra Singh Rinku, who is contesting the upcoming Uttar Pradesh elections on a BJP ticket, was recently chased away by angry locals while he was campaigning in Shakarpur village in Sambhal district’s Asmoli constituency.
In the above context, a newspaper clip is widely being shared on social media which has the headline that reads, “वोट नहीं देना मत दो पर जूते मत चलाओ: राजनाथ सिंह.” (English Translation, “If you don’t want to vote, don’t vote but do not throw shoes: Rajnath Singh.)
The newspaper clip is being shared with the caption that reads, “#सहमत हूँ ।। कड़ी निंदा करता हूं ।।” (English translation, “#Agreed .. I strongly condemn.”)

FACT CHECK
On searching with the keywords, we found a report published by NDTV with the headline that read, “पंजाब चुनाव: रैली में बोले राजनाथ सिंह – अगर वोट नहीं देना है तो मत दीजिए लेकिन जूता मत फेंकिए” (English translation, “Punjab elections: Rajnath Singh said in rally-if you don’t want to vote then don’t vote but don’t throw shoes.”). The report was published by NDTV on September 25, 2017.
Jansatta also reported about the incident on January 24, 2017. The report suggested that the then Home Minister Rajnath Singh during a campaign in Punjab said that if you don’t want want to vote don’t vote but don’t throw shoes. Singh made the above remark during a rally in Punjab’s Abohar after a shoe was thrown at the then Chief Minister Prakash Singh Badal and stones were thrown at the then former deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal.
Hence, an old statement of Rajnath Singh has gone viral on social media with a claim that it is his recent remark.
