National Youth Day: Remembering Swami Vivekananda On His 159th Birth Anniversary

This year, January 12th marks the 159th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda. Vivekananda is often considered an inspiration for India’s youth. Since 1985, his birth anniversary has been celebrated as National Youth Day.

He is considered one of the chief saints of India. Vivekananda reintroduced Indian philosophies and Yoga to the western world.

Why is National Youth Day celebrated on January 12?

National Youth Day is celebrated to commemorate the birthday of Swami Vivekananda. Vivekananda was a social reformer, philosopher and thinker who believed that youth could play a role in India’s socio-economic regeneration.


Travel and philosophy;

Vivekananda travelled to the west introducing Indian heritage, culture and philosophy. Of his many lectures, the one in Chicago at the Parliament of the World’s Religion is the most popular speech the world still remembers.

Death and legacy;

Vivekananda died at the young age of 39, attaining Mahasamadhi in 1902. Yet, a century later, his messages continues to remain relevant. He travelled across India and encouraged the youth to unite for the cause of nation building.
