Cyclone Yaas: PM Modi Conducts Aerial Survey Of Cyclone-Hit Areas, Announces Financial Assistance Of Rs 1000 Crore

Date:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday announced financial assistance of Rs 1,000 crore for immediate relief activities. Rs 500 crore would be immediately given to Odisha. Another Rs 500 crore announced for West Bengal and Jharkhand, which will be released on the basis of the damage.

The Central government will deploy an Inter-Ministerial Team to visit the states to assess the extent of damage, based on which further assistance will be given. PM Modi assured Odisha, West Bengal and Jharkhand that the Centre would closely work with the State Governments at this difficult time.

He also expressed solidarity with all those who suffered due to the cyclone and announced an ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh to the next of kin of the deceased and Rs. 50,000 to the seriously injured in the cyclone.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday met PM Modi at Kalaikunda in Paschim Medinipur district and submitted a preliminary report on the damages caused by cyclone ‘Yaas’.

“After having review meetings in Hingalganj & Sagar, I met the Hon’ble PM in Kalaikunda & apprised him regarding the post-cyclone situation in WB. The disaster report has been handed over for his perusal. I’ve proceeded now to review the relief & restoration work at Digha,” Banerjee tweeted.

Earlier today, PM held a review meeting with Odisha Chief Minister and other officials of the state administrations to assess the impact of Cyclone Yaas.

During the meeting, the Odisha government demanded long term solutions to mitigate problems caused by the repeated cyclones and provision of disaster-resilient power systems.

Seeking assistance for long-term measures to make Odisha disaster-resilient, Patnaik also highlighted the state’s demand for disaster resilient power infrastructure and resilient coastal protection with storm surge resilient embankments at the meeting.

“As the country is at the peak of COVID19 pandemic, we have not sought any immediate financial assistance to burden the Central Govt and would like to manage it through our own resources to tide over the crisis,” Patnaik tweeted.

PM Modi also conducted an aerial survey of the affected parts of Odisha and West Bengal, which have been impacted by Cyclone Yaas.
