Cyclone Yass, the second major storm to hit India after cyclone Tauktae, made landfall today in Odisha, the Meteorological Department said. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the location of the landfall is north of Dhamra and south of Bahanaga, close to Bahanaga block, on the coast, around 50 km of Balasore.

Meanwhile, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee holds a review meeting with District Magistrates, Disaster Management Committee, and other officials in view of Cyclone Yaas, in Nabanna.

Boats and shops damaged after the landfall of Cyclone Yaas in Odisha

People in Odisha, West Bengal and Jharkhand woke up to strong winds and heavy rain on Wednesday morning and braced for the cyclone. The IMD had earlier informed that the cyclone is very likely to reach near north Odisha coast close to Bhadrak’s Dhamra port by the early morning of May 26.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has urged the people living in the coastal regions of Odisha to cooperate with the local administration and shift to cyclone shelters.’ Over 11.5 lakh people were evacuated from vulnerable places in West Bengal ahead of the cyclone, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee informed on Tuesday, adding that she will stay at the state secretariat ‘Nabanna’ on May 25 and May 26 to monitor the cyclonic situation and relief work.

Meanwhile, two persons were electrocuted and at least 80 houses were damaged in Hooghly and North 24 Parganas districts due to strong winds and heavy rainfall on Tuesday at the onset of cyclone Yaas.

As many as 38 long-distance South-bound and Kolkata-bound passenger trains have been cancelled from May 24 to 29.

The Ministry of Home Affairs is reviewing the situation 24*7 and has already released the first instalment of SDRF in advance to all States, a PMO statement said.

NDRF is assisting the state agencies in their preparedness for evacuating people from vulnerable locations. It is also continuously holding community awareness campaigns on how to deal with the cyclonic situation.

The Indian Army informed that it has arranged columns and engineer task forces are on standby for rescue and relief operations. The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) has also geared up to meet the likely challenges from the developing cyclonic storm Yaas on the east coast.

The Indian Navy, too, has ramped up rescue and relief operations to minimise damages. As part of the preparation, two Navy Diving Teams and five flood relief teams comprising of specialized Navy personnel with associated equipment and inflatable boats, have been deployed.

Moreover, the Northern Railway has temporarily cancelled over a dozen trains from the national capital to and from Bhubaneswar and Puri in Odisha.
