Fact Check: Image Of Unused Ventilators At Faridkot Hospital Viral With Misleading Claim

Date:

An image has gone viral on social media in which many ventilators can be seen, hurdled together and unused, in a room at Guru Gobind Singh Medical College and Hospital in Punjab. It is being claimed that all these ventilators were sent to Punjab under PM Cares Fund, but due to negligence of the state government, they are lying unused in the time of crisis.

The image is being shared on Facebook with a caption in Hindi that reads, “It’s unpardonable & criminal !

(Translation: Sick dying but these ventilators/concentrators that were sent from #PMCaresFund are eating dust lying in the storeroom of GGSMC Faridkot, Punjab Perhaps state governments are waiting for Modi Will himself come and take them to the ICU This is the condition of the administration… Keep dying, they do not matter.)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim and found it to be misleading.

A simple Reverse Image Search directed us to an article published on May 12, 2021 which carried the same viral image.

The report published by The Tribune said that Guru Gobind Singh Medical College and Hospital (GGSMCH) in Faridkot found that 71 out of 80 ventilators which were sent under PM Cares Fund had technical fault, due to which they could not be used.

We found another article published on May 12, 2021 which also carried a similar image. In this news report as well, it was stated that a sizeable number of ventilators provided to Punjab under the PM Cares Fund last year have not been in use after they developed snags within a couple of hours of installation.

According to the news report, ‘Information has been given to the government on behalf of Baba Farid University of Health Sciences (GGSMCH is the college of this university)’.

Digging further, we found a tweet by ANI in which the Vice-Chancellor of Baba Farid University of Health Sciences, Faridkot, clearly stated, “We received 82 ventilators from the PM Cares Fund, out of which 62 were not working since their quality was not good. To date we have only 42 working ventilators.”

Thus, it is evident from the above information that the picture of ventilators lying in the room of Guru Gobind Singh Medical School and Hospital, Punjab is going viral with a false claim. Hence, the viral post is misleading.
