With Coronavirus cases surging across the country, India is witnessing an acute shortage of oxygen. Amid this, a post is being shared on social media with a claim that Homeopathy medicine Carbo Vegetabilis 30 or 200 is a ‘substitute for medical oxygen’.

NewsMobile fact-checked the post and found the claim to be misleading.
Firstly, we started our investigation by checking the website of the Ministry of AYUSH. On the website, we found a list of guidelines for Homeopathy practitioners for treating COVID-19 patients in home isolation, released by the Central Council for Research in Homoeopathy (CCRH). The list also mentions some Homeopathic medicines but Carbo vegetabilis is not mentioned as the main treatment in the guidelines issued by the ministry.
However, the guidelines mention that ‘Medicines like Phosphorus, Chelidonium, Veratrum Viride, Iodum, Camphora, Cinchona officinalis, Lycopodium, Ars.iod., Antim ars., Stannum met, Carbo veg., can be prescribed basis the symptomatic indication’. And they should be taken the approval of authorities and willingness of the patient/guardian.
According to a website called NDHealthFacts, Carbo veg is the most common remedy for acute fainting episodes where a person feels like there is a lack of air. The site also mentions that it can be in cases such as gas/bloating in the upper abdomen.
The website of the US National Library of Medicine also mentions that the Carbo veg is used to treat ‘abdominal bloating with gas’.
Moreover, we also found a tweet by the government’s nodal information agency, Press Information Bureau (PIB), rubbishing the viral claim.
“Claim: 2-3 drops of a homoeopathic medicine called ‘Carbo vegetabilis can fulfil the amount of oxygen in the body. #PIBFactCheck : This claim #Fake. Be sure to consult a doctor if you have difficulty in breathing,” PIB tweeted.
