Fact Check: Old Image From 2018 Viral As Post-Poll Violence In West Bengal

Date:

Violence has erupted in West Bengal a day after the Trinamool Congress’s landslide victory in the state’s assembly elections.

In the backdrop of this, a picture is being shared on social media claiming that it’s from the recent violence.

The post is being shared on Facebook with a caption in Malayalam that translates to, “Bengal is burning. Before the election, Mamata Banerjee said that it would be her days if the Union Army left the state after the election. This is the situation one day after the victory. The houses and shops of BJP workers are being attacked and women are being raped. Is this democracy ??? Let the protest spread against the destroyers of democracy.”

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim and found it to be misleading.

A simple Reverse Image Search directed us to an article by the Hindustan Times dated March 30, 2018, which carried the same viral image. “A police patrol party in Raniganj, Burdwan, where clashes and incidents of arson were reported following a Ram Navami procession,” read the image description.

We also found the same picture published in another news article by the Indian Express dated March 28, 2018. According to the report, ‘Fresh violence was reported from West Bengal’s Burdwan district after a Ram Navami procession was allegedly attacked by unknown miscreants, fueling tension in the area that has already witnessed a clash between members of two communities, leading to the death of one person and injury to several police officers’.

Thus, it is evident from the above information that an old picture of violence in West Bengal during Ram Navami celebrations has been falsely linked to the post-poll violence in the state. Therefore, the viral claim is misleading.
