Fact Check: Old Video Alleging ‘Rigged EVM’ Resurfaces Amidst Ongoing Assembly Elections

Date:

Amidst the ongoing assembly elections, a video of a rigged EVM is being shared on social media.

“See… Watch the video, it is the proof!! Wow: Election Commission. The way BJP is killing the democracy of the country these days! Today BJP is killing the democracy of the people of Bengal like that,” the translated caption of the post read.

The posts can be seen here and here.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the post and found that the video is OLD.

We ran a Reverse Image Search on the keyframes from the video, along with some keywords and found that the same video was also shared on Facebook (archive) in October 2020 during the Bihar elections.

We also found that the video was shared by a Facebook page (archive) on May 21, 2019, too. It should be noted that the video was shared soon after the General Elections that concluded on May 19, 2019.

In the better quality version of the video, we noticed two fingers on the EVM, one on the BSP button and the other on the BJP button. This suggests that the video is possibly staged. However, NewsMobile independently couldn’t verify the authenticity of the video.

This proves that the video is old (and possibly staged). However, we couldn’t ascertain the location and the origin of this particular video.

We also looked for media reports and found multiple reports from 2019 where BSP alleged votes going in BJP’s account due to EVM malfunction.

The reports can be seen here and here.

However, the above fact check proves that the video in circulation is OLD and is not related to the ongoing Assembly Elections.
