Some users also uploaded another video with the same claim.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the post and found the claim to be misleading.

We fact-checked both the videos in circulation and found that they are from the same incident.

We extracted keyframes from the videos and ran them through Reverse Image Search along with some keywords. The search led us to a tweet by a journalist who had posted the video on March 22, 2021.

“Tension prevails near Vijaynagar in #Mysuru after a youth died when cops allegedly tried to stop him during a traffic violation inspection. The enraged public threw stones on police vehicle and took up a verbal spat with cops,” the caption read.

On March 23, 2021, he also mentioned that 13 people were taken into custody for assaulting the cops.

Based on this, we ran a search and found video reports of the same incident. The reports can be seen here and here.

According to reports, the incident took place in Mysuru in Karnataka, where a mob attacked the police after a motorist died in an accident.

A report by The News Minute mentioned that the rider Devaraj and pillion rider Suresh fell near the police check-post on Mysuru’s Ring Road, resulting in Devaraj’s death. The mob assumed that the policeman had tried to stop the bike which in turn caused it to fall.

The above video report also mentioned that the pillion rider on the bike issued a statement clarifying that the police had no involvement in the accident.

Another video report featuring both the videos of police being thrashed can be seen here.

Hence, from the above fact check, it is clear that the video is from Mysuru in Karnataka and has nothing to do with the COVID-19 lockdown in Maharashtra.
