FACT CHECK
We put the picture through Reverse Image Search and found the picture shows carving on New Cathedral of Salamanca, which was built between 1513 and 1733, in Spain. On the Cathedral of Salamanca website, it is mentioned that the astronaut sculpture was added during the renovation works in the 1990s.
The article mentions that following the restoration work, a series of elements identifying the modern time were incorporated into the intervened area in 1993, a set to which the now-famous astronaut belongs.
We found a similar picture of the carving on a stock image website, Alamy, with a description, ‘The famous astronaut carved in stone in the Salamanca Cathedral Facade. The sculpture was added during renovations in 1992. – Image ID: GRRDWM’.
The description of the picture mentions that the sculpture was added during renovation in 1992
The above information proves that while the New Cathedral of Salamanca was built in the 16th century, the astronaut sculpture was added in the 1990s. Therefore, the claim is misleading.
