West Bengal 2021: Two Former Cops Lock Horns Against Each Other To Conquer Debra

Date:

The political storm in West Bengal is nothing short of a thriller where the scriptwriter has given pivotal roles to two former IPS officers. Humayun Kabir of TMC and Bharati Ghosh of BJP will lock horns to breach the fortress of the Debra assembly seat.

Debra constituency is under Paschim Midnapore district and about 100 kilometers away from the capital city Kolkata. Announcing the names of 291 candidates, Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee said that she will be contesting from Nandigram in the East Medinipur district.

But, a fiery contest can be seen at Debra also. While it will be a debut for Humayun Kabir, Bharati Gosh has a fair bit of experience in the political realm. She had contested from Ghatal in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

The IPS officer of the 2003 batch, who stepped into politics just a couple of months, Kabir said that his first target is to defeat BJP in Debra and it would be the party’s decision whether to induct him into the cabinet or not.

Kabir came to light when he arrested 3 BJP workers for chanting the infamous ‘Goli Maro’ slogan at a rally in the Hooghly district. The saffron party had raised objections in front of the CEC Sunil Arora.

WB BJP Chief, Dilip Ghosh said, “I told the Election Commission to see the police partiality. The same slogan in Kolkata was raised by TMC and there is no action but when it provokes a reaction in Chandannagar, the youth who shouted was picked up by police in the dead of night. Because of this, people are losing faith in the police and doubt they can vote fairly.”

His counterpart from BJP, Bharati Ghosh was a devotee of Mamata Banerjee before she joined BJP in 2019. During a public event, she had even referred to the Chief Minister as her ‘Mother’.

She was known to be an efficient IPS officer and is often credited for making Midnapore free from Naxalite terrorism.

Trinamool Congress had won the Debra seat in 2016 by 8,813 votes but trailed in the 2019 Lok Sabha election by 4019 votes.

Bengal is scheduled to go to polls in 8 phases. The voting will begin on March 27 and the results will be out on May 2.
